Education changes everything.

The heart of our work is rooted in the knowledge that children learn best when they feel safe, nourished and actively engaged.

Little Lions is an independent, coeducational preschool through 8th grade school in Kenya’s largest slum, Kibera. We place children at the center of their own learning to help them grow as critical thinkers, problem solvers, and creators.

01
Our Vision

Imagine Kenya's first female President—a precocious talent born and raised in Kibera slum. Imagine her understanding of what Kenya needs to thrive, shaped by her lived experience of both hardship and hope. We believe that such a grand vision sets us up to succeed in developing our Little Lions into humans of outstanding character: resilient, wise, humble, driven, and acutely conscious of their responsibility as children who will emerge from poverty to become the first generation of middle-class adults in their families. This vision anchors all of our thinking as we equip our Little Lions with real-world skills and global perspectives that translate more effectively than traditional approaches enable. This is our vision and our mission.

02
Our Approach

When we welcome our kindergarten children each year, we are already behind: our children arrive undernourished and under stimulated. We begin with nutrition and therapeutic oversight, combined with enthusiastic nurture and unique access to reading materials, art supplies, and internet-based learning. Our first priority is making each child feel safe, seen, and celebrated—and from this foundation, we build confidence.

With a rigorous focus on teacher quality and equipping them with tools that truly enable learning—including AI-assisted instruction and measurement—we develop language mastery, mathematical thinking, teamwork, play, and emotional wellbeing in equal measure. Critically, we encourage our students to think beyond the slum and engage with a world beyond poverty: they participate in penpal programs with schools abroad and take field trips to local farms, swimming pools, sports arenas, and animal sanctuaries.

Our efforts are bearing fruit. Year-over-year academic progress demonstrates that children who start behind can finish ahead, while the joy and confidence we observe in our Little Lions proves that transformation happens when potential meets opportunity.

03
Our Credo

Our credo demands both academic rigor and moral purpose. Our work is anchored in the conviction that children who start behind can finish ahead—and that investing in Little Lions today creates the leaders, innovators, and change makers of tomorrow's Kenya.

  • A fierce belief in one's own potential that comes from being truly seen, celebrated, and equipped to dream beyond present circumstances
  • An unquenchable curiosity about the world—built through books, exploration, and digital discovery—that transforms each Little Lion into a lifelong learner who asks "why?" and "what if?"
  • Resilience forged not from enduring hardship alone, but from experiencing safety, nurture, and the knowledge that setbacks are stepping stones to growth
  • The confidence to engage with a world beyond poverty—through language mastery, cross-cultural connection, and exposure to possibilities—while remaining rooted in community and heritage
  • Wisdom paired with humility: the recognition that emerging from Kibera as the first generation of middle-class adults in one's family carries profound responsibility to others
  • Character that balances individual excellence with collective uplift—knowing that each Lion's success opens doors for siblings, neighbors, and the next generation
  • The courage to lead with integrity in a changing Kenya, equipped with both traditional values and modern tools, committed to building a more just society for all

Leaders of the Pride

Most of our teachers and support staff grew up in slums or villages, over 60% of them were orphaned young and all have experienced significant hardship to gain an education. They know the challenges, they understand the trauma and they’re highly motivated to change the lives of our Little Lions. Lead by Tuju Otieno, our inspiring Project Director, our team also includes a full time therapist to support the children as they navigate the intense stresses of slum living.
